Ascendance of a Bookworm – Episode 26

Well, we DID say “very soon”.

This has been a bit of a ride due to some IRL things getting in the way mid-season, but we’re glad we caught up and finished it off. This series is spectacular and we look incredibly forward to working on Season 3 when it airs.

As always, thanks for choosing GJM.

  1. Thank you so much for your work on this show, I look forward to rewatching it with your subs.

  2. Man did they butcher the heck out of the mind-meld scene. It is so much more impactful in the light novel. Thanks for doing the series and I look forward to the second half of this arc next season as well.

    • I was thinking the same thing! Surely they just didn’t have enough screen time to actually fit how long the chapter was. I think they’d need at least one full episode for that? Considering the time restriction, I think they did a pretty good job – the scene carried the essence of it, despite lacking the emotions and the impact it had in the novel. If you think about it, it’s the same with everything in Bookworm – there’s just not enough time to include all Myne’s internal monologues and everything that’s happening without making it twice as long (though I honestly wouldn’t mind). I was reading volumes 4 and 5 somewhat simultaneously to translating S2, so I was able to see exactly how much was skipped and what was shifted around. There were a lot of scenes and side stories that I was sad to see skipped or only briefly mentioned in the anime, but overall I think they’re doing a pretty good job with the adaptation. If they had to cut down the material, I’m glad they did it this way and not turned this into an incomprehensible mess that most light novel adaptations become.

Anyway, I strongly recommend reading the novels to everyone who hasn’t, especially if the anime doesn’t satisfy their need for Bookworm. Even reading back the volumes that were already adapted should be pretty enjoyable despite knowing the plot, since the anime skips quite a lot. And I was positively surprised to see that Bookworm is fairly well-written compared to average light novels.

Also, I’m super hyped for S3. I’m assuming that it’ll adapt volumes 6 and 7 to finish the apprentice shrine maiden arc, and now that I’ve read them, I seriously cannot wait. I’m gonna make sure S3 happens in GJM, and I swear: I will translate it even if it kills me.
